Will Smith has sought counseling in the aftermath of his infamous slap at Chris Rock at the Oscars.
Smith, 53, 'has been going to treatment since the Oscars incident,' a source said to Entertainment Tonight on Thursday. Smith made worldwide news for his outburst toward the 57-year-old comedian during the March 27 event at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.
Smith and Rock exchanged words at the Oscars when Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, saying, 'Jada, I love you, G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to watch it,' referring to the 1997 film in which Demi Moore had a shaved head. (Pinkett Smith, 50, has alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss.)
The Philadelphia-born actor then stepped on stage and hit Rock, then returned to his seat and yelled repeatedly to the astonished crowd, 'Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth!'
Later that evening, in his acceptance speech for his portrayal as tennis patriarch Richard Williams in King Richard, Smith apologized to the Academy and other candidates but made no mention of Rock.
After calling his actions at the Oscars 'unacceptable and reprehensible,' Ali turned to Instagram on March 28 to proclaim himself a 'work in progress.'
'I'd want to officially apologise to you, Chris,' he added. I was out of line and incorrect.'
The Men in Black actor made a reference to Rock in a statement posted on April 1 when he resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (which later banned him from the Oscars for 10 years).
'The list of persons I have harmed is vast,' Smith added, 'and includes Chris, his family, many of my good friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.'
Smith has kept a quiet profile since the Oscars, with a source telling People that he was in Mumbai, India, on April 23 to focus on spirituality, yoga, and meditation. A source informed Page Six last month that Smith had failed to personally reach out to Rock in the aftermath of the Academy Awards, putting doubt on the motivations for Smith's travel to India.
'Will's "spiritual journey" to India for yoga and meditation is cynical and ludicrous, given that he hasn't personally apologized to the one person he abused in front of millions,' added the insider. 'No number of Namastes would ever compensate for that.'
Rock has remained relatively silent about the incident involving Smith at the Oscars, mentioning it briefly at a few comedy events on his stand-up tour but without delving into the details.
The Emmy-winning comedian was at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday for the Netflix Is a Joke event, when comedian Dave Chappelle was assaulted onstage by a 23-year-old guy named Isaiah Lee, who was carrying a counterfeit revolver with a big fold-out blade. (In the attack, Lee was arrested for assault with a dangerous weapon.)
Following the startling encounter, Rock ascended the stage and questioned, 'Was that Will Smith?' to rousing applause from the audience.
An interview with Smith on David Letterman's My Next Guest is self-explanatory. An interview with Smith on David Letterman's My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, which was taped before the Oscars, will be available on Netflix later this month.
